This fantasy novel by Daniel Arenson really impressed me. It uses an all new-take on the classical fantasy dragon types and implements it well. Humans that can turn into dragons, with an entire nation based on them. It also doesn’t disappoint for those looking for some darker elements as at the start of the book the human/dragons, or were-dragons as they are called in the book, have been mostly wiped out with only a single family remaining. The land they once ruled is in ruins and the man who wiped them out is ruling a human nation that still hunts down whatever of them may remain.
This may sound like a familiar story-line, it certainly has Star Wars type elements to it, but the similarity quickly fades with Arenson’s own unique story.
The villain is fantastic and he even gets his own viewpoint chapters, so we get brilliant insights into his thoughts and motivations and why he wanted to wipe out the were-dragons. The heroes begin in very dark places, hiding or on the run, but over the course of it of the story are given hope and start to fight back.
The novel ended with a fantastic battle sequence and was concluded well with just enough of left-over plot to tease at some potentially exciting things for the next one. Anyone looking for a new fantasy series to read should check it out, especially since this first book is available for free on kindle. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the series.
